Explain strategy for the morning will be to demonstrate/experience one strategy in each category and reflect together on other possibilities….

9:30–10:00 (30) Learning and Assessment (Tree/Sue?)

(5) Setup

Form small groups (4 people).  Distribute cards so that each group has 30 cards (1 deck = 3  groups).  Invite people to consider themselves personally as someone in groups (either as facilitator or participant, their choice).  Holding that focus, ask them to select 1 card that represents qualities they already do well, and then 1 card that represents something they’d like to improve on. 

(10-15) Take turns going around so each person has a chance to share. 

(10) Share highlights in full group; what other ways might you use the deck for assessment?

If it doesn’t come up naturally, talk about assessment of a group or even a full organizational/community culture; and of course using in trainings or educational settings.

10–10:45 (45) Planning (Tree/Sue?)

Have the whole group count off by 9’s and distribute one category of cards to each unit. 

Invite one person to share an upcoming event or group process challenge.  Invite wisdom from each category of what might need attention in planning and running that event.  Small group discussion and distillation into 3 sentences of under a minute total.

· card for guidance just before facilitating or at mid point

· pick random card when tense or mired/lost

· each person pick one and reflect on role in group

· each person steward one pattern for duration of session

(40) Experiential practice:  Now we’re going to experience/practice using the cards for trouble-shooting.  Everyone think of a situation you face with a group you are part of.  A specific moment in your past with an impasse of some kind, and/or a current dynamic playing out. . . .  Write down in 1-2 sentences the situation.  Form groups of 3 (1-2 pairs if uneven numbers—NOT more than 3!)  With each in turn lay out a 3-card spread (randomly dealt): 

  • 1st card:  represents the crux of the situation
  • 2nd card:  underlying dynamics
  • 3rd card:  the way forward

2:45 Games and Other Activities using the deck

[2:45-3:05] (Daniel) Review the games and activities on the website (including those included with the deck). Ask participants to describe other games and activities they've used the deck to do. Also ask if there are games and activities they have used the iPad or iPhone version of Group Works to do. Take lots of notes. 

[3:05-3:25] (Dave) The Patterns/Anti-Patterns Game: 
• Break into groups of 5-6 players. Give each group a deck.
• Appoint one player as timekeeper. Have the timekeeper lay out 12 cards dealt at random so that all players can see them.
• Youngest person starts and turn passes to the left. Each turn lasts one minute.
• On their turn, each player begins to 'act out' either one of the 12 displayed patterns or its anti-pattern i.e. behaving and talking in a way that exemplifies or contravenes one of the 12 displayed patterns. They cannot say any of the words in the title of the pattern in doing so (if they do, their turn immediately ends). The remaining players attempt to identify which pattern is being exemplified or contravened. If someone guesses incorrectly, the actor continues without responding and the person guessing incorrectly cannot guess again on that turn. When someone guesses correctly, the actor stops, acknowledges the correct guess and both the actor and correct guesser receive one point (timekeeper keeps score). The actor can immediately start acting out a pattern exemplifying or contradicting another of the 12 displayed patterns until the timekeeper signals that their minute is up. You can only act out one pattern/anti-pattern at a time, but you can switch to a different pattern if you're struggling.
• Timekeeper removes the card(s) correctly guessed and replaces them with fresh cards. Turn passes to the left. NB: On the timekeeper's turn to act, the player to their left acts as timekeeper.
• After each player has had 4 turns, game ends and player with the most points is the winner.
• Examples: Player says "I have no idea why I'm here; whose idea was it to call this dumb meeting anyway" (Anti-Pattern for Purpose); "Let's lay out the room so that everyone can see everyone else" (Pattern for Circle); etc.

[3:25-3:45] (Daniel) The Best-Fit Game: 
• Break into groups of four. Every member of the group is dealt 5 cards at random and keeps their hand a secret. Each member takes a turn recollecting or inventing an event they have facilitated or will be facilitating that poses some challenges, and describes those challenges. 
• The remaining three members each pick one of their cards and argue for why the Pattern represented could be used as the core of a process designed to meet the challenges that were described.
• The 'storyteller' then selects which pattern they were most convinced by. Whoever's pattern it was gets a point.
• Once a round is finished, the used cards are discarded and each person draws a new card to replace it.

[3:45-4:05 if time permits] (Dave) The Guerrilla Facilitation Exercise: 
• Break into groups of 4. Give each group 6 cards at random and place the cards where all can see them. (Don't use the Guerrilla Facilitation card.)
• In turn, have each person recall or invent a story or situation where the facilitator has failed or struggled to invoke one of the 6 patterns. Having set up the context and answered any questions from the others, have the story-teller then 'act out' the struggle or failure as if they were the facilitator. The others should then act as guerrilla facilitators, attempting to invoke the desired pattern in a way that is respectful, and does not undermine the struggling facilitator.
• Discuss the challenges and difficulties you encountered, and any other situations and lessons learned from your various experiences dealing with that pattern, whether or not effectively invoked by the facilitator. Discuss how you could become a better guerrilla facilitator, and hence a better participant, thanks to what you have learned.

2:00 Using Group Works in Virtual Environments (Christopher)

Exploratory exercise: Break into nine groups. Give each group the cards that correspond to one of the 9 categories of patterns (Intention, Context, Relationship, Flow, Creativity, Perspective, Modelling, Inquiry & Synthesis, Faith). Looking at the patterns in that category, discuss how the design and facilitation of group events differs in 'virtual' situations, specifically focusing on the aspect described by that category. Explore whether there are patterns in this aspect of virtual meetings that are so significantly different from 'physical' meetings that the pattern description needs modifying, or which require invoking a pattern that isn't in the current deck at all. Take lots of notes, please!
